Cosmetology Exploration Program

This program is available to Portland Public School Junior and Senior high school students. Participation in the Exploration Program will give the students an opportunity to gain information about the field of cosmetology before making a decision to pursue a career or enroll for additional training. Students must attend 65 hours of the exploratory program to receive one-half unit of high school credit. You may also receive 65 hours of beauty school course credit. If you are interested in this program, fill out this form.

Cosmetology Half-Day Program

The beauty schools listed below have programs designed for the high school student attending cosmetology school in conjunction with regular attendance of his/her high school. In order to participate in this one-half day program, a student must be a junior in high school and begin classes in July (prior to their senior year in high school). Students must also be at least 16 years old. Regular attendance is required through July to the beginning of their senior year in high school, at which time they must attend 4 hours per school day and 8 hours on Saturday, plus 8 hours per day during high school vacation periods and summer. The student will then continue in the cosmetology program full time after graduation or upon receipt of their GED. Students will receive up to three units of high school credit upon successful completion of the program. Courses of not less than 600 hours but not more than 2500 hours are available. Each school offers courses that are distinct to it's school, therefore, the students should investigate each school personally before he/she makes a final decision. When a student decides on a school, he/she must inform their counselor, who will supply the proper forms and coordinate their school schedule with the cosmetology school schedule. Students can attend cosmetology school one-half day in the morning or afternoon.

The student and parent/guardian will be responsible for making financial arrangements with the cosmetology school. Several schools will allow their students to pay weekly or monthly installments. If the student plans to pay this way, an arrangement needs to be reached with the beauty school prior to enrollment. The cosmetology school assists students who have graduated or obtained their GED with financial aid information and forms.
